If there is a thriving business on your block, there is a good chance a makerspace was behind it. While there is no pat definition for makerspace (they are far too adaptable to fit into a prescribed mold), we can think of them as hubs for creativity, collaboration and community. Many provide tools and other resources to enable artists and entrepreneurs to create new products; some offer technical training to prepare a workforce-ready population; others act as sites to explore innovative solutions to community challenges, such as housing and renewable energy. Whatever the model, makerspaces are a key component of robust rural communities. We invite you to join members of the NH Makerspace Network at Make It So, Keene’s downtown makerspace, for a tour and conversation about how makerspaces can be part of your rural development plan.
